HGV Class 1 Driver Assessment & Safety Training
Provide Driver Assessments for 15 drivers over 1 week (Mon-Fri)
3x Drivers Per day allowing 1.5 hrs driver assessing 1 hr debrief & post assessment.
Training provided by a SAFED Qualified Trainer
Course Objective:
This assessment-based training is designed for HGV Class 1 drivers in the waste management sector, focusing on accident prevention, risk management, and safe operations in challenging environments such as landfills, recycling centres, and urban collection routes.
Course Modules:
1. Pre-Assessment & Safety Briefing Including Vehicle Checks & Load Security
• Understanding the risks associated with waste transport operations
• Legal responsibilities & compliance (DVSA, HSE, FORS)
• The impact of driver behaviour on accident reduction
• Conducting daily walkaround inspections (specific to refuse collection and waste transport vehicles)
• Identifying and reporting defects before they become safety hazards
• Load security best practices to prevent shifting of waste materials
2. On-Road Driving Assessment
• Safe driving techniques in urban, rural, and landfill environments
• Managing blind spots, pedestrian safety, and vulnerable road users (cyclists, workers)
• Navigating narrow streets, tight access areas, and confined spaces
• Defensive driving strategies to prevent collisions with stationary and moving obstacles
3. Incident Prevention & Risk Management
• Common accident risks in waste transport (e.g., overturning, rollaways, reversing incidents)
• Safe reversing techniques using spotters & technology (cameras, sensors)
• Adapting driving to adverse weather conditions and site-specific hazards
• Fatigue management and dealing with distractions (mobile phones, in-cab technology)
4. Post-Assessment Feedback & Action Plan
• Individual driver performance review with actionable recommendations
• Identifying areas for improvement to enhance safety and efficiency
• Certification of assessment completion
